If you've noticed your Dachshund furiously digging in the yard, your couch cushions, or their bed, you are witnessing their natural instincts at work. Understanding why they dig is the first step to managing it.
The Badger Hunter Instinct
Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers. Their short, powerful legs and paddle-shaped paws are perfectly designed for excavating burrows. Digging is literally in their DNA.
Boredom and Anxiety
Sometimes, digging is a sign that your dog isn't getting enough physical or mental exercise. A bored Dachshund will find their own entertainment, and digging is a fun, energy-burning activity for them.
Providing Alternatives
You can't completely train the digging instinct out of a Dachshund, but you can redirect it. Provide a designated digging spot in your yard (like a sandbox) and bury toys or treats there to encourage them to use it. Inside, provide plenty of blankets for them to "burrow" into, fulfilling their need to dig and tunnel.
