While generally a robust breed that can live 12-16 years, Dachshunds are prone to a few specific health conditions due to their unique anatomy. Being proactive is the best way to keep your dog healthy.
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)
This is the most well-known Dachshund health issue, affecting roughly 25% of the breed. It occurs when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae bulge or burst. Prevention involves keeping your dog at a healthy weight, avoiding stairs/jumping, and supporting their back when handling them.
Dental Disease
Like many small breeds, Dachshunds are prone to tartar buildup, gingivitis, and tooth loss. Brush their teeth regularly (ideally daily) using dog-safe toothpaste, and provide dental chews.
Obesity
Dachshunds love to eat and can easily gain weight, which exacerbates back problems and can lead to diabetes and heart disease. Measure their food carefully and limit high-calorie treats.
