Many city dwellers wonder if a Dachshund is a good fit for apartment living. The short answer is yes, but with a few caveats. Their small size makes them ideal for smaller living spaces, but their big personalities require attention.
Exercise Needs
Despite their short legs, Dachshunds are active dogs. They require daily walks (about 30-45 minutes total) and mental stimulation to prevent destructive behavior. A tired Dachshund is a good Dachshund.
Barking Tendencies
Dachshunds are alert and make excellent watchdogs, which means they can be prone to barking at strange noises or people passing by. This can be an issue in apartment buildings with thin walls. Early socialization and training the "quiet" command are essential.
Stairs and Ramps
If your apartment involves a lot of stairs, you will need to carry your Dachshund up and down to protect their back. If you have an elevator, this is less of a concern. Inside the apartment, ensure you have ramps for them to access any furniture they are allowed on.
